The mandible and maxilla are the primary components of the facial skeleton, playing critical roles in mastication, speech, and the formation of vital structures such as the orbits and nasal cavity. Formıng the lower third of the face, the mandible is the largest, strongest, and, except for the auditory ossicles, the only movable bone of the skull base. This U-shaped structure consists of a horizontal corpus and vertical rami, gaining mobility through the temporomandibular joint formed with the temporal bone. While the corpus contains 16 sockets for dentition, the inner surface of the ramus features the mandibular foramen, which is of critical importance for local anesthesia. The maxilla, or upper jaw bone, is an immovable bone connected to the skull base via circummaxillary sutures and forms the upper jaw complex through two halves joined at the midpalatal suture in the midface. Comprising a body and four processes (frontal, zygomatic, alveolar, and palatal), the maxilla houses the maxillary sinus, the largest of the paranasal sinuses, at its center. Developing from the intrauterine period until post-puberty, both bone structures undergo significant volumetric and morphological alterations, including bone resorption due to aging and tooth loss.
