This study examines the concept of sports, which has evolved from early human struggles for survival and defense into a competitive, educational, and social tool of today; sports science as a multidisciplinary field; and the extensive applications of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in this domain. AI is a system that aims to enhance individual and societal welfare by imitating high-level cognitive functions such as human understanding, perception, learning, and problem-solving through machines. The main AI methods used in sports are Machine Learning, Expert Systems, Artificial Neural Networks, Image Processing, Natural Language Processing, and Genetic Algorithms. AI applications in sports science range from biomechanics and gait analysis to artificial coaches generating personalized training plans for athletes, from player talent identification and match result predictions using Bayesian approaches to pit-stop and tire strategies in Formula 1 racing. Additionally, racket recommendation systems for tennis players, objective scoring systems using 3D laser sensors in gymnastics competitions, and data-driven economic modeling analyzing audience preferences in sports organizations stand out. In conclusion, integrating AI methods into training and competition analysis, regardless of the sports branch, holds critical importance for the future of sports science and the enrichment of the field.
