This study titled "Crowd Management in Sports" comprehensively addresses the concept of crowds in sports events, the fundamental principles of crowd management, the factors triggering spectator violence, and holistic management strategies. Crowds are examined through their psychological and sociological dimensions ranging from Le Bon's collective mind theory to deindividuation, social facilitation, and symbolic convergence approaches; crowd types such as itinerant, disabled, spectator, and aggressive, as well as mood descriptors like passive, active, and energetic, are explained. Drawing on historical examples such as the Kayseri, Heysel, and Hillsborough stadium disasters, the study emphasizes that overcrowding, stadium architecture, locked exits, unassigned seating arrangements, high temperatures, excessive alcohol consumption, poor refereeing decisions, and fan rivalries are the key factors escalating violence and disorder. To mitigate these risks, pre-event, during-event, and post-event strategies—including CCTV cameras, emergency exits, access routes, lighting, advance ticket sales, security personnel, first aid, and police command posts aligned with FIFA safety standards—are detailed. Furthermore, through a case study of the 15th Vodafone Istanbul Half Marathon, it illustrates how crowd flow was successfully managed during the pandemic using social distancing, mask and temperature checks, hygiene measures, and staggered start procedures. In conclusion, crowd management, with its vital, economic, social, and strategic dimensions, is a prerequisite for preventing potential negative incidents in sports organizations.
