Yaşlılarda Fiziksel Aktivite
Özet
Dünya Sağlık Örgütü 65 yaş ve üzerini yaşlılık dönemi olarak kabul etmektedir ve sağlıklı yaşlanmanın temeli her yaşta yapılan fiziksel aktivitelere dayanmaktadır. İskelet kasları kullanılarak yapılan her türlü enerji harcayan hareket fiziksel aktivite; planlı ve tekrarlı hareketler ise egzersizdir. Yaşlılarda kondisyonu geliştirmek için dayanıklılık, kuvvetlendirme, germe ve denge olmak üzere dört temel egzersiz grubu önerilmektedir. Dayanıklılık egzersizleri kalp ve solunum sistemini güçlendirirken, kuvvetlendirme egzersizleri yaşa bağlı kas kaybını (sarkopeni) önler ve bazal metabolizmayı hızlandırır. Germe egzersizleri esnekliği artırarak günlük işleri kolaylaştırır, denge egzersizleri ise stabiliteyi sağlayarak yaşlılarda sık görülen düşme ve yaralanma riskini azaltır. Fiziksel inaktivite; yüksek kan basıncı, tütün kullanımı ve yüksek kan şekerinden sonra dünya çapında mortaliteye yol açan dördüncü risk faktörüdür ve birçok kronik hastalık riskini artırır. Düzenli fiziksel aktivite tüm nedenlere bağlı ölüm riskini azaltır, kardiyovasküler sağlığı, uyku kalitesini ve bilişsel işlevleri iyileştirir. Egzersize başlamadan önce EASY gibi anketlerle sağlık taraması yapılması ve bireyin kapasitesine uygun, "düşük başla ve yavaş git" ilkesine dayalı kişiselleştirilmiş bir aktivite planı geliştirilmesi önemlidir. Sonuç olarak, yaşlılık ve kronik hastalıklar hareket etmeye engel değildir; fiziksel aktiviteyi artırmak, bağımsızlığı sürdürmek için en gerçekçi stratejidir.
The World Health Organization defines old age as 65 years and older, and physical activity at all ages forms the basis for healthy aging. While physical activity includes any energy-expending bodily movement using skeletal muscles, exercise consists of planned and repetitive movements. To improve conditioning in older adults, four types of exercises are recommended: endurance, strengthening, stretching, and balance. Endurance exercises strengthen the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, whereas strengthening exercises prevent age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia) and increase basal metabolic rate. Stretching exercises enhance flexibility to facilitate daily activities, and balance exercises improve stability, thereby reducing the risk of falls and related injuries common in older adults. Physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality after high blood pressure, tobacco use, and high blood glucose, increasing the risk of numerous chronic diseases. Regular physical activity reduces the risk of all-cause mortality, enhances cardiovascular health, and improves sleep quality and cognitive functions. Before starting an exercise program, it is crucial to perform health screening using tools like the EASY questionnaire and to develop a personalized activity plan based on the individual's capacity, following the principle of "start low and go slow". Consequently, old age and chronic diseases are not barriers to movement; increasing physical activity remains the most realistic strategy for maintaining functional independence.
