Therapeutic recreation is the utilization of leisure activities as a goal-oriented, therapeutic, and restorative service model aimed at enhancing individuals' quality of life, subjective well-being, and life satisfaction. The concept of time, being an uncatchable, unaccumulative, and continuously diminishing phenomenon, is divided into work time and non-work time. The evaluation of non-work time through voluntary activities and free choice outside mandatory obligations constitutes the concept of recreation. Historical roots of this approach trace back to ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Chinese civilizations as well as Ottoman Darüşşifas utilizing water sound and music therapies; it gained a modern character in the 18th and 19th centuries through the humane treatment philosophies of Philippe Pinel, William Tuke, and Florence Nightingale. Implemented in various settings such as hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, schools, and correctional facilities, therapeutic recreation supports productivity and adaptation processes for healthy individuals alongside individuals with special needs. These practices reduce anxiety, stress, and depression levels to promote psychological well-being, while enhancing social skills, communication, and self-esteem, strengthening physical functions, and contributing significantly to the preservation of cognitive abilities such as attention and concentration.
