The female reproductive system consists of complex internal and external genital organs aimed at producing female gametes through oogenesis and providing a favorable environment for fetal development. Throughout the menstrual cycle, which is regulated by pituitary hormones (FSH and LH), primordial follicles in the ovaries develop into primary, secondary, and mature graafian (tertiary) follicles. The secondary oocyte, released during monthly ovulation, completes its second meiotic division to form a zygote if fertilized in the ampulla of the uterine tube by a capacitated sperm. The fertilized egg progresses through the morula and blastocyst stages to implant into the uterine endometrium under the influence of estrogen and progesterone hormones. During pregnancy, the placenta develops from both fetal and maternal components to sustain the fetus, while the myometrium expands through the hyperplasia and hypertrophy of smooth muscle cells. If fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum degenerates, and due to falling hormone levels, the functional layer of the endometrium undergoes necrosis and is shed via menstrual bleeding. All these histological processes repeat in regular cycles from puberty until menopause.
