The larynx, located anteriorly in the midline of the neck, serves vital functions including lower airway protection and voice production (phonation). Its anatomical framework consists of 3 single cartilages (thyroid, cricoid, epiglottis) and 3 paired cartilages (arytenoid, corniculate, cuneiform). These cartilages are interconnected via the cricothyroid and cricoarytenoid joints, enabling precise movement. The laryngeal cavity is divided into three distinct compartments: supraglottic, glottic, and subglottic regions, and includes potential spaces known as Reinke's, preepiglottic, and paraglottic spaces. Functionally, intrinsic muscles regulate vocal cord movements, while extrinsic muscles govern the fixation and displacement of the larynx. Innervation is supplied by the superior and inferior laryngeal branches of the vagus nerve, with the recurrent laryngeal nerve supplying all intrinsic muscles except the cricothyroid. Vascularization is predominantly provided by the superior and inferior laryngeal arteries and veins.
