Voice therapy is a behavioral treatment method aimed at modifying voice production and is applied for almost all forms of dysphonia, either alone or alongside pharmacological and surgical treatments. The foundation of successful therapy relies on accurate pathological diagnosis, identification of laryngeal biomechanics, and strong patient-clinician motivation. The therapeutic process consists of indirect and direct stages; indirect therapy involves patient education, vocal hygiene, and reduction of vocal abuse, while direct therapy utilizes specific techniques to facilitate optimal voice production. Correct breathing, specifically abdominal respiration, is essential for proper support, as thoracic breathing induces unwanted laryngeal muscle tension that causes vocal strain. Various techniques such as chewing, yawning/sighing, easy onset of phonation, and the accent method are employed to reduce hard glottal attacks and excessive muscle tension. Additionally, chanting, humming, and resonant voice therapy are used to improve vocal resonance and placement, while relaxation exercises and digital laryngeal massage help alleviate supralaryngeal hyperfunction. Ultimately, the efficacy of these interventions is heavily dependent on the patient's ability to perceive acoustic changes and cultivate enhanced listening skills.
