Nurse-patient and nurse-family communication, which holds a critical significance in healthcare services, stands out as a fundamental element directly influencing the success of treatment processes. Emphasizing the positive impacts of effective communication skills on individual well-being, academic success, and coping with stress, the role of health communication on the parties involved is analyzed. It is stated that nurses must effectively utilize both verbal and non-verbal communication elements (eye contact, tone of voice, posture) to establish trust-based relationships with patients and their relatives. In the information exchange process, the balanced use of open-ended and closed-ended questions, active listening, reflection, and preferring a plain language enhance patient adherence. While the E.M.P.A.T.H.Y. framework is proposed for healthcare professionals to develop their empathy skills, the steps of the SPIKES protocol (setting, perception, invitation, knowledge, explore emotions, strategy), which offers a patient-centered approach, are detailed for difficult conversations such as delivering diagnoses and bad news. Consequently, it is argued that family members experiencing grief and intense stress should not be neglected, and spiritual support must be provided to them through a clear, honest, and compassionate approach.
