This study examines the applicability and effects of the Tabata protocol—a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) model—aimed at preserving, enhancing, and efficiently managing the physical energy and stage performance of theatre and acting students. The demands placed on theatre artists on stage, such as vocal usage, character portrayal, and physical endurance, require high respiratory and cardiovascular capacity (VO2max). Although traditional moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) suffers from low adherence due to being time-consuming and requiring access to specialized facilities, high-intensity functional training (HIFT/HICT) using body weight and the Tabata protocol (20 seconds of supramaximal exercise followed by 10 seconds of rest; totaling 4 minutes / 8 repetitions) yield significant improvements in both aerobic and anaerobic capacities. Requiring no equipment and easily performed at home or in work environments, this method directly contributes to actors' stage performance by enhancing muscle strength, flexibility, physical fitness, and exercise adherence. In conclusion, the Tabata protocol stands out as a practical, time-saving, and highly effective training alternative for acting students and performing artists facing time constraints and busy schedules.
