Down Sendromlular, Egzersiz ve Spor
Down Syndrome (DS) is a genetic intellectual disability caused by an extra 21st chromosome, divided into three main genetic types: Trisomy 21, Mosaicism, and Translocation. While individuals experience significant delays in cognitive, psychomotor, and socio-behavioral development, muscle hypotonia, postural stability and balance problems, as well as motor skill deficiencies, are prominently observed. Additionally, cardiac anomalies in particular, along with gastrointestinal, respiratory, ocular, auditory, and hematological disorders, are common health problems encountered in these individuals. Regular aerobic and resistance exercise in individuals with DS regulates the cardiovascular profile and respiratory capacity while significantly improving muscle strength, motor skills, and static and dynamic balance performance. Physical activity supports cognitive functions, memory, and learning processes by increasing brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) secretion, neuroplasticity, and gray and white matter volume in the frontal and temporal lobes, mitigating the effects of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's and dementia appearing in later years. Psychosocially, exercise interventions improve self-control and social interaction while reducing anxiety, depression, aggressiveness, and attention deficits. Accordingly, chronic exercise programs should be planned by analyzing the specific needs of individuals with DS, and exercise should be made a sustainable part of daily life with active family participation.
