The assessment of body composition in athletes plays a vital role in evaluating training programs, optimizing nutrition strategies, and enhancing athletic performance. Body composition models are categorized into two-, three-, and four-compartment approaches, with evaluations carried out through direct (cadaver or carcass analysis) and indirect techniques. Indirect assessment methods include hydrodensitometry (underwater weighing), bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), air displacement plethysmography (ADP), ultrasound, and anthropometric skinfold thickness measurements. While DXA and hydrodensitometry are regarded as gold standards for three- and two-compartment models respectively, factors such as cost, equipment requirements, practicality, and accuracy determine the choice of method. Generally, a high ratio of fat-free mass and a low body fat percentage are desirable criteria for athletes. Excessive body fat negatively impacts key performance parameters such as vertical jump, sprint time, agility, anaerobic power, and maximal strength. Ideal body composition values vary depending on the physical demands of the specific sports discipline and playing position, making seasonal monitoring and the use of appropriate assessment methods critically important.
