Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA) is a contemporary and non-invasive technique widely preferred in recent years for evaluating body composition, particularly in athletic populations. With its primary application being the measurement of areal bone mineral density (aBMD) in the diagnosis of osteopenia and osteoporosis, DXA is recognized as the gold standard in this field. Secondarily, it provides whole-body and regional estimations of three main components: bone mineral, bone-free lean mass, and fat mass. It possesses significant advantages such as high precision, reproducibility, rapid results, low radiation dose (~0.5 μSv), and the ability to conduct regional analyses. However, it also presents disadvantages including expensive equipment, lack of portability, the requirement for expert technicians, challenges in direct comparison between different devices, and a scanning bed that is too small for very tall or high-mass athletes. Its fundamental operating principle relies on measuring the attenuation of X-rays at two distinct photon energies as they pass through tissues; the transition from pencil-beam systems to fan-beam technology has significantly reduced scan times. DXA is reliably utilized in academic and athletic evaluations to monitor training adaptations, the impact of competition performance on body composition, and positional differences across pre-season, in-season, and post-season periods in individual and team sports. Additionally, because maintaining ideal body fat percentages in athletes plays a critical role in both sports performance and health, longitudinal and seasonal physical tracking conducted with DXA contributes to optimizing training programs.
