Cases of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse and neglect faced by children in sports environments represent a growing and concerning societal issue worldwide today. This study examines in detail the identification of risk factors, the implementation of preventive measures, and the importance of child protection policies executed by international sports organizations to ensure that children remain safe while participating in sports activities. Insufficient supervision in sports facilities, power imbalances between adults and young athletes, the use of enclosed areas such as changing rooms and restrooms, overnight travels, adult alcohol and tobacco consumption, and social media or visual content sharing are among the primary elements that heighten the risk of abuse. Establishing a safe sports environment requires preventing changing rooms from being used simultaneously by adults and children, prohibiting adults from sharing rooms with children during trips, completely banning alcohol and smoking in environments where children are present, and strictly adhering to privacy boundaries with parental consent for photography and videography. Although positive steps such as the TFF Wellbeing and Child Protection Unit have been taken in Turkey, completing mandatory and comprehensive legal regulations under the coordination of the Ministry of Youth and Sports is essential. Raising awareness among all stakeholders—particularly coaches, managers, and sports staff—and families will allow a shift away from a purely performance-oriented approach in sports toward raising healthy, moral individuals who develop in safety, thereby establishing a positive sports culture that protects children from all forms of ill-treatment.
