Blood is a specialized connective tissue consisting of plasma and formed elements that carries essential nutrients and oxygen for the body while removing wastes. Comprising 55% of the total blood volume, the yellow and translucent plasma is mostly water and contains proteins with vital functions such as albumin, globulins, fibrinogen, and complement proteins. The formed elements of blood are erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets. Erythrocytes (red blood cells), which lack a nucleus and mitochondria, are responsible for transporting oxygen to tissues and removing carbon dioxide via the hemoglobin they contain. Leukocytes (white blood cells), playing a role in the immune system, are divided into five main types as granulocytes (neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils) and agranulocytes (monocytes, lymphocytes); they protect the body against infections, allergic reactions, and foreign invaders. Disk-shaped small platelets, formed by the fragmentation of megakaryocytes, enable clot formation in damaged vessels by converting fibrinogen to fibrin, thereby preventing blood loss.
