Taekwondo is an Olympic combat sport that requires high athletic performance, technical skill, and tactical coordination. To achieve high-level success in competitions, it is vital to accurately analyze athletes' physical and physiological requirements alongside their dominant energy metabolisms during exercise. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the human body's primary energy carrier, is resynthesized through three main biochemical pathways: the phosphocreatine (alactic anaerobic), anaerobic glycolysis (lactic anaerobic), and oxidative phosphorylation (aerobic) systems. Sudden, high-intensity strikes, combinations, and explosive techniques executed during taekwondo matches are primarily powered within the first 1–5 seconds by the alactic anaerobic system using muscle phosphocreatine (ATP-PC) stores. Field research reveals that heart rates reach 180–190 beats per minute and blood lactate concentrations increase significantly throughout matches. Nevertheless, during non-combat pauses, bouncing/stepping movements, and rest intervals between rounds, the aerobic system—which facilitates the resynthesis of creatine phosphate stores—contributes approximately 66% of the total energy expenditure, making it the most dominant metabolic pathway overall. Consequently, to maximize taekwondo athletes' athletic performance levels, power output, and recovery capacity, training programs must be comprehensively designed to target both anaerobic explosiveness and aerobic endurance.
