This study provides a detailed examination of the relationship between physical exercise and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), as well as its effects on brain health, neuroplasticity, and cognitive functions. BDNF is a 13.5 kDa dimeric neurotrophin that plays a vital role in neuronal development, survival, axonal growth, synaptic plasticity, and memory processes in both the central and peripheral nervous systems. By increasing BDNF synthesis and release in the brain and peripheral circulation, physical exercise exerts positive effects on enhanced memory, learning ability, executive functions, and mood. Furthermore, exercise-induced BDNF elevation offers a protective mechanism against neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and major depression, as well as age-related cognitive decline. Although both acute and chronic exercise interventions elevate circulating BDNF levels, the magnitude of this response varies depending on exercise type, intensity, duration, frequency, age, gender, and general health status. High-intensity interval training and resistance exercise, in particular, have been shown to significantly stimulate BDNF secretion and support neural adaptation. In addition to its cognitive benefits, BDNF actively participates in regulating metabolic processes such as glucose uptake, fat oxidation, and weight control. Consequently, exercise-induced BDNF elevation is of critical importance for brain health and sports performance, necessitating further research to fully elucidate its mechanisms of action and its relationships with various biomarkers such as irisin, inflammation, and oxidative stress.
