This study comprehensively examines the effects of physical exercise on circadian rhythms—a biological timing system operating on 24-hour cycles—along with its cellular and physiological mechanisms and its relationship with athletic performance. Circadian rhythms synchronize the organism's biological and metabolic processes with the 24-hour solar day, influenced by environmental factors such as light, sleep, nutrition, and body temperature. While the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the hypothalamus acts as the master clock, peripheral clocks in tissues such as skeletal muscle, liver, and pancreas are regulated by autoregulatory feedback loops of CLOCK, BMAL1, PER, and CRY gene proteins. Exercise serves as an important zeitgeber (time giver) capable of modulating both the amplitude and phase of circadian rhythms, resetting molecular clocks in skeletal muscle. Training conducted during the afternoon and early evening—when body temperature, adrenergic activity, metabolic processes, and muscle functions reach their peak—has been shown to enhance athletic performance, particularly anaerobic power. Furthermore, regular physical activity performed with proper timing corrects circadian disruptions, serving as a critical therapeutic tool in preventing chronic metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and obesity, maintaining muscle mass, and promoting cardiovascular health and brain function.
