Light-Based Optical Diagnostic Methods for Dental and Oral Soft Tissues
Özet
Accurate diagnostic tools are needed for the prevention or early diagnosis of diseases in the oral cavity. New and developing optical diagnostic methods should have the following features: (a) non-invasiveness, (b) absence of ionizing radiation, (c) high-resolution surface and subsurface images, (d) real-time information, (e) patient friendly, (e) reproducibility. This chapter will review the principles of optical diagnostic approaches, their applicability to soft and hard tissue imaging, and their potential use as tools in the diagnosis of lesions in the oral mucosa, dental pathologies, as well as other applications in dentistry. Optical coherence tomography is beyond the scope of this section. This issue is of course extremely important, and we refer to Ref. [76] for an overview of this technology.
