Osteoporosis
Özet
Osteoporosis is a disease of the skeleton that thins and weakens the bones. With the increasing age, osteoporosis has become a common health condition. It is characterized by low bone mass and impairment of the microarchitectural construction of the bone tissue, resulting in increased bone breakability and fractures. This definition is an international consensus set at the 1990 World Health Organization Osteoporosis Conference. Osteoporosis is classified in different ways. Among these classifications, the most frequently used classification type in clinical life is classification according to etiology. Our epidemiological information about osteoporosis is insufficient. Because the disease has no witness criteria. Since fractures are the only objective finding of the disease, epidemiological studies have focused on fractures. By identifying the risk factors for osteoporosis and fractures, we can identify individuals who are at high risk and take steps to prevent fractures by modifying risk factors that can be changed.. Many factors can play a role in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis. Throughout life, there is a constant production and destruction of bone. Osteoporosis results from decreased new bone formation or increased bone resorption. Lifetime bone loss is 20% in the men population and 40% in the women population. Turkey is an aging and developing country, and osteoporosis is big health problem. According to the FRAKTURK study, while Turkey still has a relatively low rate of hip fractures compared to other countries in Europe, the incidence of hip fractures appears to have increased significantly in the past 20 years. Knowing the pathogenesis well ensures that the treatment is effective. In the treatment of osteoporosis, the goal is to prevent fractures, increase bone density, and improve the patient's quality of life. We can become healthier societies by preventing osteoporosis, detecting it early and preventing its progression.
