Özet

Uyku; bireylerin büyüme, gelişme, öğrenme ve yenilenmesini sağlayan, periyodik olarak uyanıklık ile değişen aktif bir süreçtir. Sirkadiyen ritim ve uyku-uyanıklık homeostazisi tarafından düzenlenen bu fizyolojik döngü, NREM ve REM olmak üzere iki temel evreden oluşur. Fiziksel enerji depolanması daha çok NREM evresinde gerçekleşirken; hafıza, rüyalar ve emosyonel denge REM uykusuyla ilişkilidir. Uyku süreleri yaşa, cinsiyete ve kişisel ihtiyaçlara göre değişiklik göstermekle birlikte, yetişkinler için ideal süre genellikle günlük 7-9 saat olarak önerilmektedir. Yetersiz ve kalitesiz uyku; obezite, diyabet, kardiyovasküler hastalıklar, bağışıklık sisteminin zayıflaması ve iş hayatında tükenmişlik gibi ciddi fiziksel ve mental sağlık sorunlarına yol açar. Sağlıklı bir uyku için yatma ve kalkma saatlerinin düzenli olması, uyku ortamının karanlık, serin ve sessiz tutulması, yatmadan önce mavi ışık saçan ekranlardan uzak durulması gibi uyku hijyeni kurallarına uyulması esastır. Özellikle COVID-19 salgını gibi küresel kriz dönemlerinde ve yoğun iş temposunda uyku sağlığını korumak, genel yaşam kalitesi ve iş verimliliği açısından kritik bir öneme sahiptir.

Sleep is an active physiological process that alternates periodically with wakefulness, enabling individual growth, development, learning, and overall rejuvenation. Regulated by the circadian rhythm and sleep-wake homeostasis, this cycle consists of two primary phases: Non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) and Rapid Eye Movement (REM). Physical restoration and energy storage predominantly occur during the NREM stage, whereas cognitive functions, dreaming, memory consolidation, and emotional balance are closely linked to REM sleep. Although sleep requirements vary based on age, gender, and individual dynamics, a duration of 7 to 9 hours per day is generally recommended for healthy adults. Poor sleep quality or restriction triggers severe health issues, including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, weakened immunity, and work-related burnout. Maintaining proper sleep hygiene—such as keeping a consistent sleep schedule, ensuring a dark, cool, and quiet environment, and avoiding blue-light-emitting screens before bedtime—is essential for promoting quality sleep. Preserving sleep health, especially during high-stress periods like the COVID-19 pandemic or demanding professional routines, remains paramount for sustaining long-term quality of life and workplace productivity.
