Adverse conditions such as illnesses, traumas, and pandemics impact informational processing and trigger cognitive difficulties linked to neuronal chemical changes. To mitigate these challenges and maintain mental acuity, modifiable lifestyle interventions—primarily meditation, exercise, nutrition, mental stimulation, stress reduction, and real-life skills training—are essential. Meditation and mindfulness practices facilitate neuroplasticity in brain regions governing attention and emotion regulation, while both chronic and acute aerobic or resistance exercises enhance cerebral blood flow, oxygenation, and hippocampal neurogenesis, thereby optimizing memory and executive functions. Nutritionally, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory dietary patterns like the Mediterranean diet safeguard cognitive capacity and intellectual performance, whereas high intake of refined sugars and saturated fats actively impairs mental processes. Neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine play critical roles in successful stress adaptation, whereas chronic stress, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and outbreaks like COVID-19 provoke maladaptive neurobiological sequelae and profound psychological disability. Ultimately, implementing personalized, community-based protective rehabilitation programs is crucial to alleviate the societal burden of anxiety and dementia while successfully preserving cognitive flexibility across aging populations.
