Technology addiction is a major, globally increasing public health issue encompassing internet, smartphone, social media, and digital gaming addictions. Driven by the widespread availability of portable devices, this behavioral addiction affects all age groups, particularly adolescents. Neurobiologically, it involves the mesocorticolimbic pathway and dopamine system, sharing similar characteristics with substance addiction. Excessive technology use promotes sedentary behavior, leading to obesity, physical inactivity, cardiovascular risks, and type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, it causes physical and postural deformities, such as forward head posture, thoracic kyphosis, musculoskeletal pain, and De Quervain’s tenosynovitis. In terms of mental health, it is strongly associated with comorbidities like depression, anxiety, poor sleep quality, and social isolation. Prevention and treatment strategies include pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and alternative approaches such as exercise, sports, mindful movements, equine-assisted therapy, and "digital detox". Specifically, regular physical exercise serves as a practical and effective preventive intervention by helping regulate screen time, countering the effects of sedentary habits, increasing serotonin levels, and positively influencing prefrontal cortex volume to alleviate both addictive symptoms and cognitive impairments.
