Phytotherapy and its branch, aromatherapy, are holistic and complementary practices aimed at preserving human health and supporting conventional medical treatments. Phytotherapy involves utilizing whole plants, specific plant parts, standardized pharmaceutical forms, or nutraceuticals for disease prevention and therapy. Aromatherapy specifically employs essential oils derived from plants through distillation or expression methods. When administered via inhalation, topical massages, or baths, these volatile oils trigger distinct pathophysiological responses across the nervous, respiratory, and circulatory systems, boosting immunity and alleviating symptoms like anxiety and pain. The text details the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial benefits of numerous plants, including curcumin, rosemary, green tea, ginseng, and tea tree. However, the perception that herbal products are entirely harmless is misleading; essential oils can cause toxicity, chemical burns, adverse drug interactions, and severe allergic reactions if used undiluted. Consequently, it is vital that phytotherapy and aromatherapy applications are conducted under the guidance of authorized professionals, considering specific contraindications, proper dosages, and utilizing oils that meet strict quality and sourcing standards.
