Poor oral health is a global public health issue that shares common risk factors with chronic conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, negatively impacting individuals' quality of life across physical, social, and psychological dimensions. Dental caries and periodontal diseases (gingivitis and periodontitis) are the most prevalent conditions in the oral cavity, yet they are highly preventable and reversible through routine protective strategies. The primary etiological factor of these diseases is dental plaque (oral biofilm), a complex bacterial structure tightly adhering to tooth surfaces. Since plaque cannot be removed by rinsing alone, mechanical cleaning performed with the correct technique remains the most effective weapon in plaque control. Oral care should include toothbrushing twice a day for at least two minutes with fluoride toothpaste, alongside cleaning the interdental areas using dental floss or interdental brushes. In addition to mechanical cleaning, chemical agents that promote remineralization—such as fluoride, calcium-phosphate, nanohydroxyapatite, and propolis—along with probiotics, support the process. Furthermore, modifying environmental and behavioral factors, including reducing sugar-rich carbohydrate consumption, increasing dietary fiber, quitting smoking, and managing psychological stress, plays a key role in protecting oral health by strengthening the immune response.
